Get A Propane Water Heater To Save The Environment
Most of us don't just go out and buy a new hot water heater on a whim. We wait until one day when our water heater stops working. Then we run out and get the first hot water heater that is available same day and will hook up to our present system. We get the size available without too much thought as to what we really need. If we make a mistake, we live with it until it wears out and we shop for another one 10 to 13 years down the line. If we have gas, we buy gas. If we have electric, we buy electric and so on. Before we rush into our next water heater, we should at least think about energy efficiency and consider a propane water heater.
If your water heater is 8 years old or more, it is time to start investigating replacement water heaters. When it stops working, you can get the right choice of water heater for you and for the environment. You need to consider a few factors: Fuel Choice, sizing, life cycle costs, system type and how to minimize operating costs. Government studies have shown that gas (including propane) water heaters are more efficient than electric or oil. Purchasing a new propane water heater can save you considerable money over its' lifetime.
If you can get natural gas or propane easily where you live, you should consider it. Retrofitting for gas isn't that complicated. Any plumbing contractor should be able to do it for you. Then you need to find the proper size water heater. It should meet your water needs at the busiest time of day, without being so big it is wasteful. Most water heaters will have a "1st hour rating" on them to tell you what output they can do. A 5 person family with teens will need a bigger water heater than a retired couple. Your plumbing contractor or the store you purchase the water heater from can help you with sizing.
When shopping for your water heater, you should go on line to a water heater comparison site and check out all the different systems and types of water heaters and a comparison of their life cycle costs. This compares EF, efficiency rating, installed cost, yearly energy cost, life span and total cost over 13 years. A cheap water heater can prove to be expensive over it's 13 year lifetime. You also can choose different systems: storage, tankless, heat pump, indirect, integrated or solar. Propane Water Heaters come in many different systems and sizes.
